Marvel is at it again! They bring into their cinematic world, a country that is spread throughout the globe as a dirt, poor nation, when, in reality, Wakanda is the most advanced nation on the planet. A meteorite that was made from vibranium (i.e. Captain America’s shield) struck the nation long before mankind. Soon after, it infected the soil and animals. A few tribes had fought over the metal when a king arose, the first Black Panther. As generations passed, King T’Chaka (John Kani) took the throne. He sought out a Wakandian in America. As he was leaving, he stated that a man named Ulysses Klaue (Andy Serkis) had attacked part of the city and killed a few hundred people. N’Jobu (Sterling K. Brown) looked distressed as his friend, Zuri (Forest Whitaker) turned his back on him.
After T’Chaka’s death, his son T’Challa (Chadwick Boseman) would soon take his place on the throne and king of Wakanda. Before he would be crowned king, he, Okoye (Danai Gurira), and Shuri (Letitia Wright) are on a rescue mission to save his love-interest Nakia (Lupita Nyong’o). When it comes time for his ceremony, all of the tribes come together to challenge and maybe take the throne. M’Baku (Winston Duke) is the only one to challenge T’Challa.
The ceremony continues but it is only a handful of people who perform this other ritual. T’Challa must drink this crushed up flower that brings him to the spiritual world where deceased kings live. He is able to talk to his father. After his reuniting, he is crowned king and given back the powers of the Panther. The council has received word that Ulysses Klaue will be doing an underground trade of vibranium with Americans in South Korea. Klaue got a hold of this ancient piece of weaponry with the help of Erik Killmonger (Michael B. Jordan). Killmonger has a long rap sheet of kills from Iraq, Afganistan, the Americas, Africa, and all around the world. They were at the Great Britain museum and he asked about the old African masks and spears. They stole the artifact that was made of vibranium by poisoning the museum director.
Okoye, T’Challa, and Nakia head to the underground casino where they run into Everett K. Ross (Martin Freeman). He is the American buyer that is kind of upset that T’Challa wants both the vibranium and Klaue. A fight breaks out; Klaue and his goons split up, but they cannot escape them. Shuri had made an upgrade to T’Challa’s suit. It can absorb the kinetic energy of any blow that came his way and releases it back when struck in the same spot or if he chooses to release the energy burst.
When T’Challa returned to Wakanda, he could not hold up to the promise he made to W’Kabi (Daniel Kaluuya). W’Kabi is Okoye’s lover and a friend to T’Challa. Klaue had killed his family when he attacked Wakanda in 1992. Instead of bringing Klaue back, he brought back Ross who suffered a gunshot wound to a vertebra. Erik, after the escape, had brought him to Wakanda instead and demanded to have his rightful place on the throne. He challenged and defeated T’Challa in the ritual battle. Nakia, Shuri, Ramonda (Angela Bassett), T’Challa’s mother, and Ross travel up the mountains to search out M’Baku’s aid; he did but declined to help them in the battle to take down Killmonger. It is up to the Dora Milaje and T’Challa to reclaim Wakanda and keep its secrets from the world.
M’Baku and his army are following the king’s lead and try to kill T’Challa. The Dora Milaje, Shuri, and Nakia attack Erik. Erik is about to kill Shuri, and the Black Panther takes him out and moves the fight to the vibranium mine. Ross is controlling the aircraft from the mine so the vibranium weapons do not leave the Wakanda sanctuary. If they do, the world would become an even more dangerous place. Ross is able to just barely do this and escape the mine. In the end, T’Challa tries to convince Erik that there can still be a way for them to help, but Erik does not care. He got his wish to see the Wakandian sunset.
I loved Shuri. She is amazing because of her sassiness. She was the comedic relief of the movie. Obviously, there is going to be some humor in this movie, and I believe that it was actually really good. It flowed nicely and felt real. The humor in this one was their best. The cast overall was great. I have not heard of a lot of the names, but they all seem like good actors and actresses. I do feel like Andy Serkis could have had a bigger role. It seemed like there could be more of him in the Black Panther storyline. Michael B. Jordan was able to redeem himself in the comic book movie universe after Fant4stic (2015). He has one of the best villain’s arches in all of the previous Marvel movies. There were emotion and understanding from him. A connection that is usually lacking in these movies. Chadwick Boseman is phenomenal. I love what he is doing. I think he will become like Robert Downey Jr. and Tony Stark, Chris Evans and Steve Rogers, Benedict Cumberbatch and Steven Strange.
My favorite scene was by far the spiritual world. It was beautiful and amazing. The purples and pinks went together so perfectly. I wish the scenes for those could be dragged on for eternity. Since CGI is always brought up by fans, yes, there are scenes that have some crummy editing. It was noticeable that they were on a set. If that is something that bugs you, then it may take away from those scenes.
They did not add anything to the story of the movie, and I do not think that they will affect the whole universe either, but I could be wrong. I guess we will see in the future of the MCU.
